I’m thinking about my writing process today as I’m working on revisions. I often have more than one work in progress, in various stages of completion. Right now, I have a “finished” first draft of a novella, and a “finished” first draft of a novel, both needing some serious attention, and a few chapters of something new getting all the love.
Just because the story is told, doesn’t mean the writing ends. In fact, for me, that’s when the writing really begins. The hard part. I flesh out the characters a little more. I add scent and color and definition to the events in the story. I make it more real, more tangible. (And correct all those pesky typos I find along the way).
I shudder to think of a first draft ever finding its way into the hands of someone else. My first drafts are more like outlines–just a sketch, then I come behind and fill in the details. Lots of fine detail work intended for today.
So, coffee in hand, it’s off to work I go!
